How to set up a comfortable home office

10 June 2020

If you’re planning on working remotely on a regular or semi-regular basis, it’s worth ensuring that your home office set-up is as comfortable as possible. Here are a few tips to help you do that.

1. Adjust your workstation
Chances are, you’re using a laptop to work from home – but looking down at your screen for long periods of time can be tiring for your neck muscles. You may want to purchase a laptop stand to elevate your screen (you can also place it on a stack of books or magazines), as well as an external mouse and keyboard to ensure a comfortable and convenient set-up. It’s also a good idea to position your screen about an arm’s length away from you.

2. Invest in a good chair
If you’re going to be working from home for some time or on a semi-regular basis, it’s probably worth investing in a comfortable, adjustable office chair. Ideally, you want to your elbows to be resting at about desk height – this way, you can comfortably use your mouse and keyboard without hunching your shoulders. A good office chair should also provide you with sufficient and adjustable lower back support.

3. Consider a foot rest
You may want to use a foot rest to help you achieve a comfortable sitting position and ensure that your feet aren’t dangling or just reaching the floor. While there are plenty available online, you can also attempt a DIY version if you’re feeling handy.

4. Protect your eyes
Find that your eyes take a bit of strain when you work? Avoid bright overhead lighting, try to reduce glare on your computer screen, and make a conscious effort to blink frequently to prevent dry eyes.

5. Take regular breaks
Sitting for long periods tiring for your body and brain, so get up now and then to get a glass of water, go outside for sun and fresh air or do some light stretching. And remember to step away from your desk to take a proper lunch break each day.
