Spring-clean in autumn

9 May 2020

It may not be spring, but thanks to the lockdown, now’s the perfect time to get stuck in and give your home a deep clean. Here are a few tips to help you get going.

1. Start with your surfaces
There’s something inherently calming about clean, clutter-free surfaces so start by working through any papers, pens, junk mail or other ‘stuff’ that’s collecting dust on your tables, desks and countertops – toss, recycle or pack it away. Then use a slightly damp microfibre cloth to wipe away dirt.

2. Disinfect high-use areas
Given the risk of COVID-19 contamination, focus on high-use surfaces like door handles, light switches, banisters, remote controls, and kitchen and bathroom counters – UNICEF recommends using a cleaning product that contains bleach or 70% alcohol.

3. Wipe down appliances
Well-used appliances can show up a lot of dirt, from food splatter and dried coffee and tea spills to sticky finger marks. So be sure to wipe them down using a good multi-purpose cleaner, and then buff them up with a clean dishcloth. Remember to give your kitchen cabinets a light cleaning while you’re at it.

3. Tackle your floors
Armed with your vacuum cleaner, broom and squeegee, clean all of the floors in your home – using gentle cleaning products suitable for each of your various surfaces – and pay particular attention to your skirting boards and hard-to reach areas where dirt and dust tend to accumulate.

4. Deep clean your bathrooms
While you probably give your bathrooms a quick once-over once or twice a week, now’s the time to give them a thorough cleaning. Scrub grimy grout, clean your shower doors, and polish your taps. Finding it hard to get rid of soap scum or limescale on taps and showerheads? Use vinegar or lemon juice to break down these stubborn residues.

5. Don’t neglect your windows
While windows may not form part of your regular cleaning schedule, don’t forget to include them on deep-cleaning days. Along with cleaning the windows themselves, remember to dust blinds and wipe down window sills.
