What to look for in a family home

25 February 2020

House hunting for the family home of your dreams? Whether you’re planning on buying your first home with your partner or looking for the perfect place to raise your family, here are a few questions to ask yourself when assessing a potential property.

1. Is there room to grow?
Take a critical look at the property and consider whether there’s enough room for your growing family, particularly if you plan on having more children in the future. Are there enough bedrooms and bathrooms? What about entertainment and living areas? And is there potential to add on to the home if you’d like to?

2. Does the kitchen work for you?
The kitchen is often called the heart of the home because it’s where family tends to gather. So consider whether the layout of the kitchen works for the lifestyle you have in mind. Is it open plan, is there a nearby dining area for your family to enjoy meals together, is there enough cupboard and counter space, and is there room for all the appliances you need?

3. What about indoor-outdoor living?
If you enjoy entertaining and an outdoor lifestyle, consider the indoor-outdoor flow in your potential home. Is there a patio for braais and al fresco dining, and is the garden big enough for your pets and children to play?

4. Is there enough storage space?
A growing family needs plenty of storage space to accommodate toys, bedding, sporting equipment and more. So consider the storage your potential new home has to offer you – look out for built-in cupboards, a linen cupboard, vanities in the bathrooms, and storage areas for bikes, skateboards, tennis racquets, etc.

5. What about security?
Consider the security measures in place when looking assessing a home. Is it located in a secure residential estate? Does it have a perimeter wall in good condition? What about electric fencing, burglar bars or an alarm system? If the property doesn’t have the security measures you want, consider how much it will cost you to install them down the line and factor that into your budget.

6. Does the location suit your needs?
Think about whether the location is somewhere you can see yourself living for years to come. Is the property located in a family-friendly neighbourhood? And is it close to schools, your workplace and convenient shopping areas?
